Skiing in Jeans is Back in Record-Breaking Numbers

Remember Skiing in Jeans? Waterproof, insulated fabric have replaced jeans for most skiers. But skiing in jeans is back in record-breaking numbers.

Remember skiing in jeans?

Very few skiers over the age of 10 wore snow pants back in the day as I remember. A roomy pair of jeans with long johns underneath was standard ski clothing.

The fashion had a lot of flaws.

Jeans don't move well.

Jeans aren't waterproof.

Snow sticks to denim. Crash in a yard sale or glide under a snow gun and your jeans became encrusted with snow. Once that happened, try not to go indoors to warm up.

Warm up = said encrusted snow melts, resulting in soggy, cold jeans that will freeze when you go back out in the cold.

If you thought jeans didn't move well before, refrozen jeans will take that to a whole new level.

Nevertheless, jeans were the style. Fabrics like Gore-Tex weren't widely available, or perhaps weren't affordable. Snow pants were for kids.

Thankfully those fabrics came into the mainstream later and skiers evolved to wear warm, waterproof pants.

Some trends were meant to die out and be left in a pile of dust, or fresh powder. But jeans and skiing is one of those things that just won't die.

The biggest Jeans Day on snow is coming up.

On December 5, don your best pair of dungarees. Strap on your skis. Head to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming and they will reward you with a $35 lift ticket and if you need rentals, those are half off. All you have to do - ski in your jeans.

Why? Why? Well, to break the world record, of course!

It won't be the first time if they set a record. This is the resort's 3rd annual Ski in Jeans Day. Each year bigger than the year before to break their own record. In December 2024, 3,114 skiers participated.

If you're lucky enough to be in Wyoming that day...join in the fun. There's a lot of camaraderie when you're all shivering on the chair together. Let's hope it's a warm day with bluebird skies. Reserve your spot ahead. There is a capacity limit, even when they're tying to break a record.
